Our Story

For over two decades, Alaska Woods has been salvaging exceptional old-growth Sitka Spruce from Alaska's pristine waters and forests, providing luthiers worldwide with the finest tonewood available.

The Alaska Advantage

Alaska's Sitka Spruce grows in a unique environment where cold temperatures, abundant rainfall, and mineral-rich soil combine to produce timber with exceptional acoustic properties. The slow growth conditions create tight, even grain patterns that are prized by instrument makers around the world.

Our EarthTone Soundboards™ come from old-growth trees that have been naturally seasoned over decades. This aging process, combined with the inherent qualities of Sitka Spruce, produces tonewood with superior resonance, clarity, and projection.

Our Commitment

Sustainability

100% reclaimed timber. We salvage fallen and drift logs, giving new life to wood that would otherwise be lost.

Quality

Every piece is hand-selected and graded by our experts. We only sell tonewood that meets our exacting standards.

Heritage

We preserve the legacy of Alaska's old-growth forests by responsibly harvesting and sharing this precious resource.

Our Process

01

Salvage

We carefully retrieve old-growth Sitka Spruce logs from Alaska's waterways and forests. These logs have been naturally seasoning for decades.

02

Selection

Each log is evaluated for grain quality, density, and acoustic potential. Only the finest specimens are chosen for our tonewood.

03

Processing

Logs are quarter-sawn to maximize grain orientation and stability. We use traditional techniques to preserve the wood's natural properties.

04

Grading

Every piece is individually graded based on figure, grain characteristics, and tonal qualities. Our grading ensures you know exactly what you're getting.
